What is Plumbing?

In a property plumbing is the system of pipes, fixtures, and apparatus which distributes water in the building and removes waste materials.  It plays a crucial role in ensuring that we have clean water to drink, a functioning bathroom, and a reliable means of disposing of waste.

How to Prevent Plumbing Issues

Plumbing is an essential part of any household however it can be prone to a variety of problems from leaking taps to burst pipes or rising damp.  By taking some basic steps, you can avoid common plumbing problems and save yourself the hassle of costly repairs.

  • Schedule regular maintenance
  • Check for leaks
  • Use strainers in plug holes
  • Don’t flush or pour away things that will clog drains
  • Monitor boiler water pressure
  • Insulate outside pipes for winter
  • Know the location of your stop cock and mains water shut off valve

Types of Water Heating Systems

In a property there are two different types of hot water system. Although the central heating system and domestic hot water share some parts, the hot water and heating pipework are separate.

There are two types of domestic water heating

 

  • Hot water stored in a cylinder. Vented or unvented systems.
  • Cold water heated on demand. Single point water heaters or combi boilers
